Insanity Workout vs. P90X? Which one is right for you?

At first glance Shaun T’s Insanity Workout Program and P90X may seem pretty similar. You might be even thinking that either one will work for you. Both programs offer dramatic physical changes and a pretty intense workout to say the least. However there are some differences and one program might be better suited for you than the other. Here is a handy comparison to help you compare and make a better decision about which is right for you.

It’s all about personal preference!

Both Insanity and P90X are great workouts, so either one you choose is going to get you in FAR better shape than you are in right now. But there are some differences and you might find one workout more appealing to you personally than the other.

Workouts

P90X is an all-in-one program that’s designed with variety in mind. Each day offers a new style of exercise and you’ll find yourself moving through weight lifting and punching to Kenpo karate and even some yoga. This is perfect for the person who gets bored doing the same routine each day. By using so many different types of workouts your body doesn’t get accustomed to moves either, so you are always slimming down and gaining muscle.

BUT, if you are more of the type of person that wants a hardcore, no frills workout, Insanity might be better for you. It’s shorter, only about 45 minutes a workout in the beginning and lasts just 60 days instead of P90X’s 90 days. The Insanity program also only focuses on plyometrics, core and cardio moves.

Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll find on the DVD Workouts:

Insanity

Insanity begins with an introduction and Fit Test. You’ll record your results and save them to compare to your improved stats once you’ve been working on the program for several weeks. The Insanity Workout then moves into lots of cardio-intense, fast paced workouts, such as Plyometric Cardio Circuit and Cardio Power and Resistance, focusing on the upper or lower body respectively. From there Insanity offers up a recovery routine (don’t think you’re catching a break here though!). Then it’s on to more cardio and working on that six-pack with Cardio Abs and Core Cardio. After a month of these exercises it’s time to move on to Max Interval Circuit (one truly intense workout, even for the Insanity program!) and more extreme moves with Max Interval Plyo for your legs and Max Cardio Conditioning and Abs for core muscles. You’ll constantly be re-visiting moves and working to achieve top form and speed in your workout, which means no matter how many times you work your way through the series, there will always be room for improvement.

P90X

P90X takes a different approach. Focusing on the Chest and Back first, the workout starts out with an intense routine of resistance moves that are going to work your shoulders, back, chest and upper arms right out of the gate. It’s then on to Plyometrics with extreme cardio moves that will test your limits. From there you’ll focus on your Arms and Shoulder with muscle-building presses, curls and fly moves to give you the most toned and defined biceps and triceps. P90X likes to change things up so after those grueling workouts the program switches to offer up some yoga to stretch and invigorate those well-used muscles. But things aren’t quiet for long with a pairing of Leg and Back exercises and Kenpo, a mix of kick-boxing style moves that are sure to have you sweating. The program progresses into some serious Stretching and Core Synergistics, an all in one routine full of cardio, stretches and resistance moves. But you’re not done yet! P90X then comes at you hard with intense muscle-building exercises for the Chest, Shoulders and Triceps and Back and Biceps. If that wasn’t enough the P90X takes things to the next level with Cardio X and Ab Ripper X- yes those Xs stand for extreme and these workouts will guarantee that you push your body to its peak performance to obtain unbelievable results.

Accessories

If you like to use fitness equipment to keep your interest level up, P90X might be the workout program for you. You’ll need a chin up bar, a chair, a set of dumbbells and/or bands and good exercise shoes. With the Insanity workout you’ll only need a really good pair of cross-trainers and a workout mat.

Intensity

Since Shaun T’s Insanity workout program relies on maximum effort interval cardio, you’ll need to move fast and be prepared to sweat, A LOT! The Insanity program is designed to keep your body in a constant state of calorie-burning. And don’t think you’ll just be doing jumping jacks for 30 minutes, the Insanity program is going to constant challenge you to jump up, squat down, push up, jump high, until you can’t do it anymore. P90X on the other hand uses a slower pace (that’s still pretty intense) but focuses more on weight training and muscle development than just calorie burning.

Results

Want to shed pounds and have a sexy body full of lean muscle tone? Then Insanity is right for you! If you’re looking to build on a current moderate fitness level and want to gain bigger muscles and strength than P90X is going to get you ripped! Either way, you’ll be pushed to your limits and will end up with a better body than anything you could have imagined!
