Michelle Obama’s “Lets Move” Healthy Living Campaign

I must admit, I’m extremely excited about this new healthy living campaign that Michelle Obama has launched for our children.

I think it’s an awesome idea and will raise awareness of how childhood obesity has skyrocketed throughout the United States of America.

Needless to say, I never hate healthy as a child.  My sisters and I always ate items like fruity pebbles for breakfast, pizza or a hamburger for lunch, and pork chops for dinner.  My mother hardly ever cooked vegetables and when she did, they always included hamhocks or bacon.  So, when she did make cabbage, the bacon would always ruin it.  Or when she cooked greens, the hamhocks would always overshadow all of the powerful nutrients in the greens.

Our family dinners and family reunions always consisted of(oh and still do) a bunch of cakes, pies, peach cobbler, soda, juice, ham, pork ribs, potato salad, sweet peas, and much much more.  We would typically walk away from a family dinner after consuming at least 2000 calories.  Now that’s CRAZY!

While writing this, I’ve just realized that my mom or dad never told me what I should or shouldn’t eat.  They never stopped me from eating cinnamon rolls or snack cakes.  They never forced me to eat good vegetables or lean meat.  They never taught me anything about the importance of eating healthy.

Which brings me to why I’m so elated about the “Lets Move” campaign.  We can no longer afford to feed our kids unhealthy foods and allow them to sit in the house and watch television or play video games all day.  The reason I was able to somehow “make it” without getting obese is because I was very active.  I played basketball, rode my bike and played with friends outside all of the time.  Kids these days not only eat cake and pie, but also sit on there butts all day.

Well Michell Obama has decided to launch a great campaign to help our kids overcome this adversity.  Lets pitch in and help her out.  I’m starting with my own children, as well as my nieces and nephews.  Where are you starting?  Here’s a good place http://www.raisethebarfitness.com/
